Llanelli Youth Theatre Knocks on the door of Number 10!!!!

As 2009 was drawing to a close, and Llanelli Youth Theatre was preparing for its Christmas production of ANNIE, the call came through to invite the Company’s Artistic Director and Administrator, Christopher J. Rees and Jill Stevens to the Community Heroes Reception at 10 Downing Street, at the request of Prime Minister Gordon Brown.

“When Nia phoned to say that she had put forward Llanelli Youth Theatre as a worthy recipient at the Community Heroes Reception in our 25th year, we were quite overwhelmed.  We were also filled with an enormous sense of pride that our MP had chosen us as her Community Heroes”.

“We travelled up to London on the day of the reception, and met Nia at her office in Portcullis House as she conscientiously drew her work at Westminster to a close, as she was traveling back with us to Llanelli that night to carry out her constituency work in Llanelli.  We then accompanied her to the BBC studios, where she was due to do an interview for Dragon’s Eye to be broadcast that evening.  From there we made our way to Downing Street, where after rigorous security checks we walked through the doorway of 10 Downing Street.  It was quite an emotional experience.  25 years of LYT had been recognised by none other than the Leader of our Country.”

“We chatted with many other MPs and their guests from across the country, and then we were introduced to Gordon and Sarah Brown.  He was very welcoming and thanked us for all our work with Llanelli Youth Theatre.”  Jill Stevens

Commenting on the occasion, Nia Griffith MP said

"I was so proud to see Llanelli Youth Theatre's Jill and Chris at No 10 Downing Street being congratulated by Prime Minister Gordon Brown for 25 years of outstanding service to the community through the excellent work that they do with young people. As well as teaching young people to produce really professional performances, there is no doubt that the skills they help young people develop such as confidence, self-expression, commitment and teamwork will be valuable to them whatever career path they take."

Llanelli Youth Theatre has become renowned for its range of productions, providing its young people with experiences of all styles of theatre.  At the heart of this training are the weekly workshops which are run throughout the year.  LYT is now recruiting for 2010, so if anyone between the ages of 7-25 years would like to become involved, please contact Jill Stevens on 01554 773894 / 07870 385513 or on j.stevens.94@btinternet.com  No experience needed, just bundles of enthusiasm and a desire to learn.

There is something unique about Llanelli Youth Theatre.  It is motivated and driven by a strong force; that “something quality” that was sown by the year of ’84.  It has ambition and strives for success. It has resilience in abundance. As a by product of its productions it has enriched the lives of so many young people.  Llanelli Youth Theatre is one of the major successes to come out of our town, and thoroughly deserves its national recognition as our Community Heroes.
